This month’s speakers include:

Dorkbot is — as always — a free event.

*Notice: There may or may not be any robot turkeys at this event. But it’s worth showing up to find out.

Updates to the speaker list:

  1. Jonathan Leistiko & Sharon Cichelli – how to cast your face for more mask-making possibilities.
  2. Laura Smith – Postponed till November unless you want to see an unfinished project. This 2-person costume I am in the middle of making but haven’t finished yet with my Lilypad Arduino just so I could talk about it at Dorkbot.
  3. Christian Miller – The Uberhoop – http://sites.google.com/site/uberhooper/.
  4. Lindsey Greene of The Dead Left – Bass distortion boxes with fun LEDs.
  5. The Dead Left will also perform so for those about to rock, well, you know the rest.

We will also have some Dorkbot t-shirts for sale for $10. Continuing to clear out the old shirts to make way for the new ones (which will be the same as the old ones, but in a wider variety of sizes).

Beer and water will also be available for a buck a bottle (suggested donation).

All money made from t-shirt and beverage sales goes directly to paying for our rental cost for the 2011 SxSW Dorkbot tent.

Be sure to check out their website for location details and more info about their excellent new space.

We are still looking for both short and long presentations to join a few excellent guests who have already signed on. As a special treat, we will be raffling off a lighted fabric belt we hope will serve as inspiration and a source of parts for an excellent craft based project.

Show off your electronics projects at Dorkbot 24

Dorkbot 24 on September 20, 2010!
7pm – 10pm in the ACTLab (Studio 4B of the CMB building) at UT. The building is located at the SE corner of Guadalupe and Dean Keaton (26th Street).

Don’t forget to RSVP on the Facebook Event page. It’s not required, but it helps us to figure out how many chairs we won’t be able to come up with to accommodate everyone:

The lineup so far:

  1. Carlos Santiago – Presenting material from electronicsisfun.com
  2. Dustin Willis (Salvage Vanguard Theater) – Robot actors for an upcoming play
  3. Brandon Wiley (formerly of Bittorrent, Inc and the ACTLab) – New web protocol that makes for unbreakable Twitter connectivity in politically volatile areas, like Iran.

Don’t worry, there’s still time!
We still have room for some 5-minute presentations, so if you’re working on a project and want to show it off, or you’re stuck on a project and could use some assistance from the group, bring it in and talk about it! If your presentation requires additional setup time, come to the ACTLab about 30 minutes early (around 6:30) to test your equipment and do some general kibitzing.

Dorkbot is, as always, a FREE event.

Dorkbot 24 – Back to School September Meeting @ACTLab http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotaustin/2010/09/back-to-school-september-meeting/ http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotaustin/2010/09/back-to-school-september-meeting/#comments Wed, 01 Sep 2010 05:43:24 +0000 Dustin http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotaustin/?p=456 First and foremost, for those that have not heard, Dorkbot Austin is under new management.  Our good friend Nick Pietraniec has accepted an exciting new job offer packing up his family and soldering irons to seek his fortune in the Pacific Northwest.  We wish him the best of luck on his journey!

Secondly, our September meeting!  This will take place Monday September 20th, 7pm – 10pm in the ACTLab (Studio 4B of the CMB building) at UT.  The building is located at the SE corner of Guadalupe and Dean Keaton (26th Street).

Facebook Event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=147003611998758

We are going to try a bit of a different format for the meeting, and are currently seeking presenters.  Please contact me at milsyobtaf [at] gmail [dot] com to put your hat in the ring.  We would like to welcome the traditional 20-30 minute presentation / discussion format of (mostly) finished projects as well as bring in shorter 5-10 minute presentations of projects that are in progress or even in the planning stages.  Need to brainstorm past a roadblock or seek help from the community?  These shorter presentations are for you!

Questions or concerns?  Don’t hesitate to let me know.

Any Dorkbotters interested in participating in the Austin Futures Fair? http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotaustin/2010/08/any-dorkbotters-interested-in-participating-in-the-austin-futures-fair/ http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotaustin/2010/08/any-dorkbotters-interested-in-participating-in-the-austin-futures-fair/#comments Mon, 09 Aug 2010 16:17:49 +0000 laura http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotaustin/?p=446 I received this message from Michael Litt the other day, and thought I’d pass it along to you. If anyone is interested in contributing/participating, contact Mike Litt directly.

We are currently working with What is Austin? and Liveable City on the Austin Futures Fair. This is a 3 day event to increase public awareness of and participation in the the City of Austin’s Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan, which will guide development and growth over the next 30 years.

Our goal is to ensure that the Plan has a meaningful community voice behind it that is invested in its successful implementation.

We want to do this by bringing various artists, community groups, activists, architects, designers, and other creative citizens together to showcase their visions of a future Austin with no limits, 30 to 100 years from now.

The main festivities will take place on Friday, September 17th, from 7pm – 11pm, and will feature art installations, slide show presentations, and graphics. We would love for you to participate in one of two ways described in the downloadable guidelines at AustinFuturesFair.com.

Also, a short introductory video we had fun making can be viewed there as well.

Interested people can fill out this form to submit their interest in participating!

The deadline to submit interest is Friday August 13th!
