CALL FOR ARTISTS - PEOPLE DOING STRANGE THINGS WITH ELECTRICITY II:

The second annual dorkbot-sea exhibition, People Doing Strange Things With Electricity II, at Seattle’s Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) will run from January 20th, 2005 – March 2nd, 2005, opening CoCA’s 2005 season. The first People Doing Strange Things With Electricity show was the most successful recent exhibit at CoCA, and we are back by invitation in 2005. dorkbot community members from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and artists working with electricity anywhere – from kinetic sculptors to Tesla freaks to sound artists to digital manipulators to light artists to roboticists to videographers to nanotechnologists and every shade of artist and technologist in between – are invited to submit proposals for works of any size and scope to dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org. A People Doing Strange Things With Electricity Award of US $1000 will be given to the creator(s) of exhibition attendee’s favourite artwork, with the aim of enabling and encouraging artists working with technology to continue to push boundaries, experiment and grow stranger.

ELIGIBILITY: PDSTWE II is open to all artists, local, national and international, creating work which either requires electricity in order to function or be displayed, and/or where electricity has formed a significant and intrinsic part of the creation of the work. There are no processing or entry fees for proposals.

PRESENTATION: Proposals for artwork should be submitted in the form of a paragraph (maximum 1000 words) describing the work, including details of size/dimension, impact on the venue and display requirements, special technical requirements and relevance to the premise of the exhibition. Artists must also describe any maintenance, set-up or shut-down requirements for their work as understood at the time the proposal is generated, and be prepared to guarantee the robustness of their proposed artwork under normal exhibition conditions. Proposals must be accompanied by an artist’s statement or biography, and images of either the work itself or past, similar projects (if available). Digital images and emailed proposals are strongly preferred, but 35mm slides or prints (photographic or digital prints up to 8.5” x 11”) will be accepted. Digital images may be submitted on CD (NOT on floppy disks), but again, email or pointers to an artist’s website are preferred. All slides must be numbered and labeled with the artist’s name and title of the work, and all images in any format must be accompanied by an image list. Video artists may submit a video tape or DVD disc in lieu of images. A self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) must be included with sufficient postage for the return of your slides or prints – if no SASE is enclosed, your materials will not be returned. Emailed proposals must not exceed 1 megabyte in size – this includes any documents, images, sound files etc.. All digital files and emailed proposals must be virus-free.

DEADLINE AND NOTIFICATION: The deadline for entry for PDSTWE II is November 30th, 2004. Proposals postmarked or emailed after this date will not be considered. Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance by December 5th, 2004. Notification will be made by email (preferred) or, where email is not available, using the SASE provided by the artist. Artists who do not provide an email address or SASE will not be notified unless they are accepted to exhibit.

PDSTWE AWARD: Exhibition attendees will be asked to vote once for their favourite PDSTWE II exhibit. An award of $1000 will be given to the creator(s) of the artwork receiving the most votes. Votes will be tallied on March 3rd 2005 following the close of the exhibition. The winner of the PDSTWE award will be notified by email (preferred) or mail by March 10th, 2005, and the funds sent on or before that date.

ALL QUESTIONS, COMMENTS to dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org

Show your work! - upcoming opportunities:

SeaTac International Airport: while there are opportunities for artwork to be shown at SeaTac courtesy of CoCA, only conventional (i.e. non-electronic) artwork can be shown at this time due to power restrictions. So, if you have non-electronic work that you’d like to show for a 3-month stint at SeaTac, contact dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org for more information.

dorkbot video screening opportunity at 911 Media Arts Center: video artists are strongly encouraged to contact Kate if they'd like to include their work in a dorkbot event at 911 Media Arts Center; date TBD. When we have enough momentum, we'll be able to start work on this in earnest.

If you would like to speak at a future dorkbot meeting, or dj or perform music after the presentations, please contact Kate Seekings. Here's information on how to sign up:

What is the format of a dorkbot meeting?

Each dorkbot-sea meeting consists of:
        - Brief intros, announcements, administrative details
        - 20 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of Q&A
        - 20 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of Q&A
        - 20 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of Q&A
        - Opendork mic for anyone with anything to say, show-and-tell etc.
        - Performance, and time for mingling, networking, work-in-progress

We will sometimes deviate from this formula if you have a suitable special event that you’d like to propose, but typically we like to have three speakers for an evening as it gives more of us a chance to show off and be shown off to.

What should I present?

Imaginary presentation topics:
        - A demo of the new motion tracking software you're writing
        - Playing a video you made
        - An explanation of how you hacked your game boy to get it to make cool bleeping noises
        - Trouble shooting/brainstorming your remote-controlled sandwich-making robot
        - Bringing in some dancers you're working with and having them demonstrate the interface
used in your new mind-control ballet
        - Discussing your approach to electronic sculpture

Demos of commercial software are not appropriate, unless you wrote the software or you are making it do something particularly novel or interesting. On the other hand, presenting a piece that was created using commercial software is fine.

Do I get paid to speak?

No. We don’t charge admission and we don’t pay speakers - dorkbot-sea is a free, community event.

Resources

You are encouraged to provide most of the resources needed for your presentation, including your own computers and mixing equipment. Some CoCA/dorkbot-sea equipment will be available, but do bring your own wherever possible. We'll have:
        - A video projector and screen
        - A fast Internet connection
        - A mixing board and powered speakers

We also have guidelines distilled from previous dorkbot meetings that describe some ins and outs of presenting to our audience that we'll be delighted to forward as soon as you've committed to a date.

How do I sign up?

Just email Kate.
