Our camp is one side of Bentley Copse, and the internet connection is the other side. There are a *lot* of trees in the way. In tests on the preparation day, Ian M. found that the wireless connection from the office actually reached down to very near our camp anyway, and with a big antenna, might reach all the way.

Equipment

I (petef) can bring assorted wireless bits and pieces:

  • assorted access points:
    • Linksys WRT54G
    • a Buffalo AirStation or two
    • ...?
  • a PoE (Power over Ethernet) kit - I don't have any long pieces of cat-5 though.
  • one (or possibly two) 16dB directional antennae

Ideas

If we can plug an access point into the network (in the training room?) and connect an external aerial we could point it at another aerial and access point across the site to bridge the network to the far side. But only if we can get decent line of sight around/through the trees.

Failing that we could maybe string 100m of cat-5 through the trees and run Power over Ethernet to an access point to provide wireless access that way.

It would be good to get a clearer idea of what the layout is - where we would need to plug things in to get the network and the power from and where we are trying to extend the network to - and how far we are trying to stretch. Unfortunately I can't make the pre meet. :-(
