•  Art & Play: From New Ideas in Bio-Art to Bio-Tech?  Presented byAmy Youngs, associate professor of Art & Technology in the Dept of Art at OSU, April 23, 2008, at TechColumbus

What's Next?  Where will the new ideas in biotech, bio-science or bio-art come from?

Technology – especially bio-technology – is a high value proposition for new business opportunities, especially in central Ohio.  Needs are great and research is following many paths today.

In addition to traditional sources of research and entrepreneurs - ART and PLAYful experimentation may prove to be key to breaking old paradigms.

Amy Youngs, associate professor of Art & Technology in the Dept of Art at OSU, offered some of her insights - from 20 years of work in assembling exploratory ideas as art around the world, including Europe, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, and all across the United States.

As Einstein once said: "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."  The work of people like Amy Youngs raises our level of consciousness  - and gives us the footing to see new directions and new opportunities from a different vantage point.

Youngs' art demonstrates that playful exploration can be a source for new insights leading - possibly - to new levels of understanding and invention at the forefront of new technology.

This was the First Annual Earthweek Seminar of DorkbotColumbus recognizing the importance of unstructured technology pursuits for the interests of the planet during EarthWeek.

Dorkbot recognizes that not all progress is a purposeful process, with well-defined strategies and pre-ordained goals.  Much progress has been the result of informed and well-practiced play, utilizing the artifacts of technology an to create art and new levels of knowledge from which more serious efforts might take off.

• Intro & Update on Robot Components presented by Matt Howard, January 22, 2008

Creating technology projects that incorporate movement, action and functionality is getting easier and less expensive all the time. Matt Howard presented an application-oriented look at open source hardware called Arduino and some very approachable new software called Processing to help beginners get started and more experienced experimenters to expand into new areas. This event was held at TechColumbus, courtesy of the Platform Lab, at 1275 Kinnear Rd.

Digigravitation: OSU Art & Technology Exhibition: November 29, 2007

Program hosted by Ken Rinaldo and Amy Youngs, Art & Technology faculty members at Ohio State University.

Dorkbot Columbus met at this event and discussed a GREEN focus for the first part of 2008. Want to do strange GREEN things with electricity? Might be fun and do some good at the same time! Plan for a presentation event during Earth Week, April 2008.

• Sonic Tooth - Experimental Musical Instruments
   Saturday, April 28, 2007

Haskett Hall, Gallery and Soundstage, on the campus of The Ohio State University.

The making of music has been a continuing source of innovation. Sound and music can be made with a variety of materials and has been the turf of artists ranging from Spike Jones in the 1940's to John Cage in the 80s to the Blue Man Group today. There is a large world wide community of artists and inventors creating unique acoustic and electronic sound devices: Check out a vast link list at the Experimental Musical Instruments web site and more info in this DorbotColumbus blog entry!

As Dorkbot gets underway here in central Ohio - the application of new ideas and fun to create music and sound is an appealing way to involve a variety of artists and technologists. Creating sound and instruments can be as simple as a box with a rubber band or as complex as custom built electronic instruments.

First DORKBOT Event - SUCCESS!!
October 17, 2006
Wexner Center, Columbus OH

The Wexner Center Film Video Theatre was the site of our first Dorkbot Columbus event. Nearly 100 people attended - many from the campus community, and a number from the general community interested in Ken's work as well as initiating the Dorkbot premise here.

The primary purpose of the meeting was a presentation by Ken Rinaldo, professor of Art & Technology at the Ohio State University, in the Department of Art. Professor Rinaldo presented an overview of his work with special focus on the new work the Autotelematic Spiderbots.

A full report is available here. Rinaldo was featured in a story in the Columbus Dispatch on Oct 16, 2006 (registration may be required).

Following the formal presentation, there was a discussion of future Dorkbot events, and plans for activities and other events, led by convener Rich Bowers.
